Garage door won’t open or close?

First, look for damage from a safe position

If the door is crooked, off track, visibly damaged or accompanied by a loose cable or broken spring, stop here and request professional assessment. Do not operate the opener, release an unstable door or try to lift a heavy door yourself. The checks below apply only when the door and surrounding area appear undamaged.

Remote does not respond

Consult your opener manual for its battery and lock-mode instructions. Note whether the wall control works normally while the remote does not; that distinction may help a provider narrow the issue. Do not rewire controls or touch exposed wiring. Record the opener brand and model only if the label is safely accessible without climbing or entering the door path.

Door starts closing, then reverses

Look for ordinary objects blocking the opening and move them only when the door is stationary and it is safe to do so. Note any sensor indicator lights or opener error codes and compare them with the manufacturer manual. Do not bypass safety sensors, hold a control to force a damaged door closed or increase force settings to overcome resistance.

Motor runs but the door does not move

This symptom can involve the opener connection, drive mechanism or the door’s lifting system. It cannot be diagnosed reliably from the sound alone. Repeated attempts may worsen a mechanical problem. Stop using it and describe whether the motor runs, whether the door moves at all and any recent power outage or unusual noise.

Power outage or intermittent operation

Check whether other normal household devices have power, without opening electrical panels or working on wiring. Follow the exact opener manual for battery-backup use. Do not use a manual release when the door is open, unbalanced or damaged. If you cannot establish that operation is safe, leave the door alone and request help.

Turn symptoms into a useful request

Write down when the problem started, whether it happens every time, any displayed code and which control you used. Choose opener help for control or motor symptoms, or repair for visible door damage. A provider still needs to inspect the system before confirming a diagnosis or price.
